State of Hawaii Green Certification Award

March 17, 2011

Governor Neil Abercrombie has just presented to Kilauea Lakeside Estate, Kauai, the 2010 official State of Hawaii Green Certification Award. Kilauea Lakside Estate is the first private property in the Hawaiian Islands to receive this distinguished honor. Past recipients have been the Ritz Carlton and Marriot corporate hotels.

Steve Hunt, with his wife Janine, are lifetime residents of Hermosa Beach and Kilauea, Kauai. Steve created Kilauea Lakeside Estate in 1980.  In Kilauea, Steve has been a nursery owner and  sustainable farmer in Kauai and has been a lifetime environmental preservationist and sustainable developer with over one hundred and fifty projects worldwide to his credit. Steve is also a commissioner of the Hermosa Beach Green Task Force.

Since receiving various honors and degrees in environmental development from the University of Southern California, Steve taught environmental development at UCLA and has consulted for over two hundred international and national companies during the last forty years.

In the last ten years, Hunt has introduced over fifty environmentally friendly initiatives in Kauai with the goal of being zero carbon emission neutral.
Since it's inception, Kilauea Lakeside Estate has contributed 100% of all proceeds from the agricultural and other uses of the properties to various charities, primarily dealing with the environment and other needs. Donations have been made to the City of Hermosa beach and many local churches , schools and other organizations.  In conjunction with their 501c3 non profit foundation in Kilauea, the Save Waiakalua Foundation, ongoing work continues to provide assistance for the preservation of the environmental resources of the community.

In the February 2011 issue of Islands Magazine, it recommended Kilauea Lakeside Estate as one of the "World's Best Natural Escapes". Information on Kilauea lakeside Estate can be found at www.Kauaihoneymoon.com

Self-Sustainable Kauai Eco-Resort: Solar Power

kilauea, kauai, hawaii solar panels

When renovating the Kilauea Lakeside Estate in 2009, we made the decision to make the entire property fully self-sustainable, and one of our ecotourism projects was the installation of these solar panels! Harnessing the power of the sun to power our Kilauea resort promotes ecological sustainability in Kauai and provides our visitors a 'greener' experience with a smaller carbon footprint. We are excited to have this up and running!

Kilauea lakeside estate. Kauai installing wells for ecotourism and improved sustainability

Kauai is blessed with abundant water from an aquafour located about 170 feet below the surface. We obtained our permits to drill the well and found good water at this level. For irragation and drinking this water will eventually be powered by solar panels to further improve the sustainability.
